How Your Air Conditioner Works

Fall has arrived, but here in Texas, we’ll still need to run our air conditioning for the next couple of months. In this post, we’ll discuss how your air conditioner works. Knowing how it works will help you know when it needs service and how to keep it running strong. We’ll even tell you how The Bosworth Company in Kerrville can help!

THE PARTS

Remember – an air conditioner is different from a fan. It doesn’t just move the air, it removes the moisture, making a humid Central Texas afternoon a lot more comfortable. This process requires taking the air that’s inside your home and forcing it outside. It’s much more complicated and scientific than this, but here are the five primary “ingredients”:

  • Refrigerant is the cooling agent. It’s pumped through the system and changes the warm air in your home to liquid as it’s moved outside. It also keeps your HVAC unit from overheating.
  • The Compressor is the heart of the system that pumps air throughout your home and the air ducts.
  • The Condenser is the part of the compressor that transforms the refrigerant. Once the refrigerant is pumped into the compressor, the condenser helps turn it into liquid. This all happens when your exterior unit is running.
  • The Expansion Valve is where the refrigerant basically re-cools the refrigerant. When the liquid expands (expansion valve, remember), it cools down and is ready to be pumped back into your home.
  • The Evaporator Coil is the final step. The cold liquid is “evaporated” in the plenum (the metal box in your attic) before it is distributed into the ducts as cool air.

WORTH THE CALL

This could have been much, much more scientific and detailed, but we just wanted to cover the basics. Here’s the good news: you don’t need to know it all, because our experts do! Let the Bosworth Company in Kerrville maintain your A/C by investing in our Fall Clean & Check. It’s a great way to give your entire unit a tune-up! Thanksgiving Plumbing Tips

Thanksgiving Plumbing Tips

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost Thanksgiving. However, it’s just a few days away! The friendly, professional plumbers at the Bosworth Company want to share some Thanksgiving plumbing tips to make your Turkey Day more festive and less fiasco.

Prevention 101: Thanksgiving Plumbing Tips

Toilet Etiquette

When you’ve got a house full of company, your toilets end up being used more frequently. Leave a polite note to guests asking that only toilet paper be flushed and keep a waste basket conveniently available. Additionally, thinner, more water-soluble toilet paper is less likely to cause clogs than quilted, high-end brands. Consider stocking up! Another safe bet is to keep a plunger readily available – just in case!

Garbage Disposal Don’ts

Thanksgiving Plumbing Tips
Say no to putting pumpkin in your disposal!

Your garbage disposal is great for turning some solids into a pulp. However, there is a laundry list of items you should never put in the disposal. Some things aren’t meant to go down the drain, as your disposal isn’t equipped to handle the job.

  • Grease, fat, or oil (particularly animal fats);
  • Potato skins, pumpkin, squash, or other fibrous produce;
  • Large bones;
  • Coffee grounds.

Keeping these items out of your disposal will also keep you from needing an emergency service call. You should also consider using a sink strainer to keep things from going down the drain.

Set a Shower Schedule

If you’re hosting guests as well as Thanksgiving dinner, have your company wait 10-15 minutes between showers. Not only does this allow the water heater some time to recharge, it gives icky stuff (think hair and skin cells) a chance to make their way down the pipes instead of causing clogs.

Plan Ahead

Homeowners are often aware of quirks in their plumbing system before holiday events. However, instead of instructing guest to “just jiggle the handle” or putting up an “out of order” sign on that wobbly toilet, it’s better to get plumbing issues sorted out before the holidays. If it’s too late to get the Bosworth pros to your house before Thanksgiving, definitely give us a call before Christmas.

The entire team at Bosworth wants to wish you a very happy, full, and joyous Thanksgiving. If you do encounter a plumbing emergency during your holiday event, know that you can count on us to handle the job. We’re available for holiday service calls, as well.

Is Your Home Cold Weather Ready?

Is Your Home Cold Weather Ready?

Though we’re experiencing unseasonably warm weather for fall, it’s never too early to get your home cold weather ready. In fact, we’re expecting a 30° temperature drop mid-week! The Bosworth Company prefers preparedness over panic, so be sure to follow these steps on getting ready for chilly winter temperatures.

Get Your Home Cold Weather Ready with These 4 Tips

Prep the Plumbing

Though many people expect cold weather problems to come from their furnace, they often forget about frozen pipes! It’s important to get your plumbing ready for cooler temperatures, including sealing off outdoor valves and insulating exposed pipes. Not only can these freeze when the temps drop, you also risk them bursting when water expands.

Seal the Deal

Prevent cold air from entering your home by sealing drafty windows and doors. As your home settles with age or seals begin to wear, your home may not be as protected from air leaks as you’d like. Additionally, keep your garage above North Pole temperatures by installing weather stripping along the garage floor.

Invest in a Nest®

Have you heard about the Nest WiFi Thermostat offered by Bosworth? It’s a high-tech way to save on your energy bills each month. With the Nest, you’re able to take control of your thermostat, no matter where you are! Not only does it help keep your home toasty warm, on average, the Nest saves consumers between 10% and 12% on their monthly heating bills.

Prepare, Prepare Prepare

Maintaining your home is critical – and we aren’t just talking about cosmetic improvements. When you include our fall electrical and heating services as part of your home maintenance plan, it can help you avoid a catastrophic event when it starts to really get cold. Your Thanksgiving Checklist

Can you believe Thanksgiving is a little over 2 weeks away? It seems like just yesterday we were in the dead heat of a West Texas summer! Having a Thanksgiving meal at your home can be a joyful time spent with loved ones…but it can also be stressful and overwhelming. Avoid the stress this year with our Thanksgiving checklist…starting 2 weeks out!

2 Weeks Ahead

  • Make a guest list.
  • Communicate with guests about who is bringing what and what time everyone should arrive.
  • Be sure you have enough serving dishes, flatware, glassware, tablecloths, napkins, tables and chairs to accommodate your guests.
  • If any of these items need to be cleaned, do it now.
  • Polish silver, if necessary. Wrap in tarnish-resistant silvercloth and set aside.
  • Plan and make decorations, place cards, and wreaths.

1 Week Ahead

  • Clean your refrigerator to make room for your Thanksgiving items.
  • Review your recipes and prepare a cooking schedule by day for the days ahead, and by the hour for the day of Thanksgiving (be sure to check the thawing time on your turkey!)
  • If necessary, prepare your guest room for any guests who will be staying with you.
  • Do any needed outdoor work like raking leaves, sweeping your porch, or cleaning the glass on your front door.
  • If children will be attending, get out games or movies to keep them occupied. Coloring books are fun, too!

4 Days Ahead

  • Review recipes, determine what ingredients you’ll need, and make a list for the grocery store (it’s helpful to organize it by aisle/section of the store).
  • Match up recipes with serving dishes and serving pieces. Put sticky notes onto each bowl and platter according to which dish goes in each.
  • Do any major housecleaning and organizing.
  • Confirm with guests who is bringing what, and if they’ll need oven space.
  • Put up wreaths and nonperishable decorations.
  • Plan ahead for leftovers. Organize containers, bags, and wraps so guests can take home what they want.

  • Buy flowers for the table, or put together your centerpiece.
  • Go grocery shopping.
  • Clean fruits and vegetables.
  • Fill salt and pepper shakers.
  • Complete light housecleaning.
  • If you plan to have a fire, lay a fire in the fireplace, ready to light later.

  • Do spot cleaning of the rooms that will be used.
  • Set the table.

Thanksgiving Day

  • Get out all serving pieces and condiment dishes. Set out on the serving table or buffet.
  • Fill condiment dishes with anything you may be serving (pickles, olives, cranberry sauce, etc.) Cover each dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate.
  • Assign specific family members or relatives to be in charge of various tasks  (tending the fire, answering the door, pouring drinks, hanging up coats, etc.)
  • Preheat oven.
  • Put turkey in oven and cook according to your recipe.
  • Prepare coffee, if necessary.
  • Set out refrigerated dishes including condiments, cranberries, and salads.
  • Heat bread or rolls as needed.
  • Light fire.

Fall Leaves

Fall Maintenance Tasks

Can you believe summer is almost over? We sure can’t! Soon, we’ll be trading sunglasses for scarves and the kids will be going back to school! It may be difficult to prepare for the transition, but it’s easy to prepare your home for fall! Check out our fall maintenance tips below!

Fall Maintenance Tasks

1. Caulk Windows

Caulking windows and door framesirs is one of the least, but most important, fall maintenance tasks. Proper sealing prevents heat from escaping and water from getting in.

2. Check Your Roof

Your roof is your first defense in protecting your home. Inspect for missing or lose shingles and repair where necessary. It’s best to proactively deal with repairs at the end of summer/beginning of fall than to discover a problem in the winter!

3. Reverse Ceiling Fan

Create an upward draft that redistributes warm air by changing the direction of your ceiling fan.

4. Prepare Porch

Clean deck and porch furniture and make any needed repairs. Cover outdoor furniture and barbecue grills and store in a protected area. In addition to furniture maintenance, it’s important to have spare blankets/sheets available for covering outdoor plants.

5. Peeling Paint

Inspect exterior walls for peeling paint. This is a sign that the existing paint can no longer protect the siding of the building. If you don’t repair the peeling paint, the siding will deteriorate and lead to expensive future repairs.

6. Fall Clean & Check

It’s important to make sure all the electrical and heating systems and devices in your home are working properly when fall comes around. Our licensed electricians can help with anything you need, including the following heating and electrical services:

  • Adjusting any necessary connections
  • Replacing filters
  • Checking heat exchanger & thermostats
  • Lubricating motors

…for both commercial & residential!

Worth The Call.

Hopefully, these fall maintenance tasks help to keep your home comfortable during the fall season! If you need help preparing your home for fall and winter, schedule service today!
