10 Ways To Save On Energy Bills This Winter

Winter months are tough. The temperatures are cold, but constantly having the heat on can be hard on your checkbook. Check out these ways to save on energy bills this winter, without sacrificing your comfort.

1. Open The Blinds (During The Day)
Even if it’s cold outside, the warmth of the sun can naturally heat your home.

2. Treat Windows
Along the same lines as opening your blinds, you can install window treatments to not only capture, but retain heat within your home. Windows that aren’t treated properly can allow heat to escape.

3. Close The Blinds (At Night)
Similar to #1, it is important to close your blinds at night when temperatures drop. This will help to keep the heat in and the cold out.

4. Reverse Ceiling Fan Circulation
Instead of keeping your fan off, reverse the circulation to push warm air down into your living space. This method is most effective after you’ve ran your heater for a little while.

5. Keep Bathroom Doors Open
Humidity increases the temperature of your home. So, when showering, let the warm, humid air seep out into the rest of your home.

6. Enhance Bedding
During the winter, consider adding a down comforter or flannel sheets to stay warm during the night.

7. Keep The Doors Shut
The smaller the space, the easier it is to keep warm. So, when possible, keep all the doors in your home shut.

8. Add Attic Insulation
Keep heat in your home by adding insulation to your crawl space or attic. Insulating your attic is one of the best ways to save on energy bills this winter.

9. Candles & Fireplace
Don’t forget to utilize candles and your fireplace to produce heat for your home. Always be careful to keep an eye on open flames and extinguish when you leave the space.

10. Oven Door
After baking, leave your oven door open. This will allow the heat to circulate throughout your kitchen.

Cold Burst Pipes & Frozen Pipe Repair

How To Protect Your Pipes

The (oddly) spring-like temperatures we enjoyed last weekend can make us forget that it’s winter! With winter comes freezing temperatures, and with freezing temperatures come busted pipes. Find out how to protect your pipes and prevent costly damages!

How To Protect Your Pipes:

  1. Keep your thermostat temperature consistent. If you turn it down at night, you could risk freezing (and bursting) pipes.
  2. Keep your garage door(s) closed. This will prevent exposing water supply lines to freezing temperatures.
  3. Allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing by opening kitchen and bathroom doors.
  4. Let cold water drip from the faucet when the temperature is freezing or below. Running water through the pipes help prevent them from freezing. Just a slow trickle will do.
  5. If you are going on an extended trip away from your home, leave the heat on (set no lower than 55° F).
  6. Add insulation to attics and crawls spaces to maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
  7. If there is a remodel in your home’s near future, consider relocating exposed pipes. This will increase the protection from freezing.

5 Signs Your Heater May Be Going Out

HVAC manufacturers and the Department of Energy recommend that you should replace your HVAC system after its expected service life of 15 years. But with systems as expensive as they are, most people have a hard time replacing something that isn’t broken. However, you certainly don’t want to be without heat during the winter! There are 5 signs your heater may be going out…take a look!

  1. Exhaust smell in your living space could indicate a bad heat exchanger.
  2. Another symptom of a bad heat exchanger is soot around heat registers in the house or around the furnace itself.
  3. The heat exchanger could have a hole if you find water under your furnace or corrosion in your unit. This could potentially result in dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide in your home, so make sure that you have a functioning detector.
  4. Water on the floor below the boiler indicates there could be a crack in the exchanger (a chamber that holds water).
  5. Rust on the bottom of the boiler unit indicates water damage from outside the appliance.

Repair Or Replace?

When determining whether to repair or replace your unit, consider operating cost. For example, consider a damaged unit that is 7 or 8 years old (about half of the expected service life). Depending on the cost of a repair, it may be in your best interest to replace the unit entirely. If you repair the system, you’ll have a system that runs at the same efficiency for another 7-8 years. If you choose to replace, you can choose a more efficient system that saves you money in energy bills for approximately 15 years.

Whether you decide to repair or replace, the professionals at Bosworth are happy to diagnose the problem, answer any questions you may have, and determine the best fix for you. Contact us online 24/7 or call 432-570-5233!
